Altree ESG and Impact Investing Specialist

About the roll:

We are seeking an ESG and Impact Specialist for Altree Capital, for the Altree Kadzi Gender Climate Fund. We are looking for a candidate who is excited and committed to investing in women-led or women-oriented businesses with a climate-smart approach, in sub-Saharan Africa. The selected candidate will be a core member of our investment team leading on ESG management, ESG due diligence and screening of investments and leading on climate and gender integration into the companies we invest in. The selected individual will lead our end-to-end investment process, from screening investments to supporting portfolio companies manage ESG aspects. The successful candidate will also have a role in a diverse and firm-wide set of initiatives to enhance our fund’s operations and strategy..

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Analysing potential investment opportunities to determine alignment with the fund’s sustainability objectives and policies
  • Assisting in developing and implementing ESG/Sustainability roadmaps and action plans for portfolio companies. This involves liaising with portfolio company management teams on a regular basis to support the improvement of ESG/sustainability practices, performance and risk management, to ensure a consistent approach is taken across the portfolio and the Fund’s sustainability objectives are met.
  • Manage ESG investment process including managing due diligence processes
  • Implement climate change investment strategy objectives within the Fund and across investments
  • Keeping up to date with new developments, contributing to investment papers and participating in investment committees
  • Participating in client meetings, investor meetings and other investment meetings
  • Preparation of quarterly, bi-annual and annual Fund ESG and Impact reports
  • Collecting, analysing, and interpreting ESG data from various sources, including company reports
  • Staying up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and evolving ESG and climate standards
  • Represent the Altree Kadzi Gender Climate Fund's investment team in internal and external forums, positioning us as a leader in gender and climate investing and impact investing more broadly

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • +5 years of experience in investment, ESG or sustainability management. Focus on climate integration will be a great bonus
  • Degree or Masters in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Finance or relevant degree, private and public sector partners, and entrepreneur support organizations who are active in tech for resilience and impact investments more broadly
  • Experience working in private equity or investments or in a sustainability consultancy firm on investments
  • A deep technical knowledge of GHG measurement, ESG reporting and sustainability management
  • Good knowledge of sustainability trends with willingness/interest in learning further
  • Understanding of ESG factors and their impact on investment decisions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to carry out multiple duties and responsibilities at the same time
  • Strong analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Strong research skills, with the ability to draw meaningful conclusions from data
  • Intellectually curious with a dedication to go the extra mile
  • Collaborative attitude with a team-first approach
  • Ability to self-manage and prioritise in a fast-paced environment
  • Highest ethical standards

  • Familiarity working with different cultures and languages
  • Experience investing in climate-smart solutions favourable

Anticipated Start Date: as soon as possible

Preferred location:

The position can be based in any major African city, with a preference for Johannesburg, South Africa or Nairobi, Kenya (other locations will be considered).
